Neurotoxin AKA Botox
What is Botox?
Doctors have been using a drug called Botox to help reduce wrinkles and facial lines for many years. Botox is actually a brand name for a type of toxin produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. There are other brands of this type of treatment, such as Dysport, Jeuveau, Daxxify and Xeomin, but Botox is the most commonly known because it was the first one of its kind that could be injected to treat wrinkles.

FAQs
How does neurotoxin injections work?
Neurotoxin injections, a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure, are known for their efficacy in reducing the appearance of wrinkles. By intercepting nerve signals to facial muscles, these injections induce muscle relaxation, leading to smoother and younger-looking skin.
When should I get neurotoxin injections?
Neurotoxin injections aren't solely determined by age, but also by the severity of wrinkles. Various factors, such as cellular changes, collagen loss, genetics, and sun/environmental damage, contribute to the development of wrinkles. Some people opt for treatment as a preventative measure in their 20s-30s. If you're worried about wrinkles, it's recommended that you seek advice from a licensed professional.
What are the potential complications?
The most common complication following injection is Bruising. Other common short-term complications include pain, swelling rash, short-term decreased sensation at injection site, short-term postinjection headaches, and infrequently, prolonged migraine headaches
How long does neurotoxin treatment last?
The duration of the effects produced by Botox is between 3 to 6 months. As the muscles regain their action, the wrinkles and lines start to become visible again, requiring further treatment.
What are the most common areas to treat?
The FDA has approved Botox treatment for various dynamic wrinkle areas. These areas include glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows), crow’s feet (lines at the outer corner of the eye), and forehead lines (horizontal lines across the forehead). Apart from these areas, medical practitioners also use Botox for “off-label” procedures. These additional treatment areas for Botox include chin wrinkles, nose wrinkles (bunny lines), eyebrows, lines around the mouth, neck wrinkles, and lip flip.
Who is NOT a candidate for treatment?
To receive botulinum toxin injections, you must be at least 18 years old and healthy. Those with neuromuscular disorders, pregnant or nursing women, those with weak facial muscles, ptosis, deep facial scars, or skin problems near the injection area are not suitable for the treatment. Inform your injector about your medical history, medications, and supplements to ensure safety and make adjustments if necessary.
